Cherry Red Records is a long-established British independent record label founded in 1978 by Iain McNay (and originally Richard Jones) in Malvern, Worcestershire and now based in Chiswick on Golden Mile London.
It’s known for its wide-ranging catalogue and eclectic roster — from early punk and post-punk acts like Dead Kennedys an Everything But The Girl to many more contemporary and niche artists — and for releasing one of the seminal indie compilations, Pillows & Prayers in 1982.
Over the decades Cherry Red has evolved into a major curator of music history, operating numerous imprint labelsacross genres (punk, soul, reggae, progressive rock, pop, metal etc.) and actively managing a vast catalogue of recordings and publishing rights. It also specialises in reissues, box sets and archival releases in addition to new music.
Today the label remains fiercely independent and prolific, with hundreds of physical and digital releases each year and a reputation for championing music outside the mainstream.
