Brentford’s Engine Room Gets £2.6m Boost

TThe London Museum of Water and Steam has secured a £2.6m grant to finish restoring its iconic Great Engine Room. Part of a £270m nationwide arts and heritage package, LMWS is one of 29 local museums receiving support.

The funding will waterproof the Grade I listed Great Engine House, upgrade environmental conditions, and reverse damaging past repairs. Launched mid-2024, the ‘Great Engine House Project’ aims to restore historic beam engines—like the 90 Inch, still one of the world’s largest working examples—which once powered clean water to millions of Londoners.

This grant tackles a long-standing maintenance backlog exacerbated by COVID lockdowns and is a key piece of the government’s plan to revitalise cultural venues and drive local growth.
